Al-Qaeda (Arabic: القاعد; translation: "The Base") was a militant international Islamist organization, responsible for numerous terrorist attacks around the world.

History

Al-Qaeda's origins dated back to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. In 1991, they were responsible for bombing an embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, killing several Americans.
