Ammonium dysterate was a gas that could be created by mixing household cleaning agents and chemicals. It resembled a white vapor. If inhaled in sufficient quantities, it caused crippling pain, and eventually, death.

Day 7[]

Two mercenaries, David Emerson and Litvak, and two moles in their group, Tony Almeida and Jack Bauer, were attempting to kidnap the former Prime Minister of Sangala, Ule Matobo and his wife Alama Matobo, in Washington, D.C. However, the Matobos had locked themselves into a panic room. In an attempt to force them to exit, Jack created ammonium dysterate from a collection of liquids stored in the residence's kitchen. The gas was expelled into the panic room's ventilation system. Ule was prepared to die instead of capture, but Alama chose to open the door rather than suffer the effects any longer.

Background information and notes[]

  • Ammonium dysterate is a fictional chemical created for the show, like the gas Sentox and the liquids tetradiozene, hyoscine-pentothal, and Beroglide.
  • The gas may be based on chlorine gas, which (like the fictional gas) is both highly lethal and easily created by mixing two common household chemicals (bleach and hydrochloric acid). It could also be chloramine, with similar properties, made from bleach and ammonia.
  • Ammonium dysterate apparently is extremely irritating as Jack coughed harshly and extensively after only a brief proximity to it. (As opposed to gasses like Sentox, where Jack held his breath for twice as long but didn't cough afterwards.)
