The Atlantic Ocean was the second largest of Earth's oceans, after the Pacific. It was bounded by North and South America to the west and by Europe and Africa to the east. The Atlantic adjoined the Mediterranean Sea via the Strait of Gibraltar, as well as the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and the Indian Ocean to the southeast.
