Biography[]

Christopher Thomas Howell was born in Van Nuys, Los Angeles in California. His father, Chris Howell, was a stunt coordinator and rodeo performer, and from an early age Howell became interested in the business. He began acting at the age of four with an appearance in the Brian Keith Show. Howell went on to become a rodeo champion when he was 12 years old. Howell graduated from Saugus High School in 1984, and attended The National Conservatory for Drama Arts.

Howell appeared in a minor role (credited as Tom Howell) in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). However, it was his performance as the lead Ponyboy Curtis in the classic Francis Ford Coppola movie The Outsiders that turned him into a teen idol (The film also featured John Meier).

After that, Howell appeared in films like Tank (with James Cromwell), Red Dawn (with Powers Boothe), Secret Admirer, The Hitcher, and Soul Man. During the filming of the latter, he met and married actress Rae Dawn Chong, but they divorced the next year.

As his popularity declined, Howell began starring in direct-to-video films with few occasional appearances in mainstream films. In recent years, he has seen a resurgence in his career with supporting roles in films like The Amazing Spider-Man (with Kevin McCorkle, Michael Massee, and Vincent Laresca), as well as guest appearances in numerous TV shows. His most notable guest role is that of serial killer George Foyet, in the show Criminal Minds. In 2017, Howell appeared in Netflix’s The Punisher (with Shohreh Aghdashloo, Tony Plana, and Paul Schulze).

The hardcore band Botch named a song after him called "C. Thomas Howell as The Soul Man", yet the song is not about him. Today, he is remarried to wife Sylvie Anderson and has three kids: Isabelle, Dashiell, and Liam.
