Cubbyday5 — The mug, held by Tony Almeida, in "Day 5: 7:00am-8:00am"

A Chicago Cubs coffee mug belonging to Tony Almeida, humorously dubbed "Cubby" by fans and later by members of the cast and crew, is a recurring prop featured in 24. First appearing in the pilot episode, the mug was a reference to Chicagoan actor Carlos Bernard's (and, presumably, his character's) support of the Cubs baseball team. The mug appears in scenes throughout the first five seasons, and later returned (along with Tony) in the first season of 24: Legacy.

History

During the filming of the bombing of CTU in "Day 2: 10:00am-11:00am", it was decided that the mug would be destroyed in the blast. Bernard tossed the mug into the air but, instead of falling and shattering on the ground, it became caught on some wires and survived. Taking this as a sign, he and the production decided to spare the mug, which went on to appear in several more episodes, usually at Tony's CTU station or at his home. (24 Inside)

In Season 4, the mug appears in two episodes, both times at Tony's house at 21408 Kipling. In "2:00pm-3:00pm", Tony can be seen pouring a beer into the mug while watching a soccer game on television.

Cubby's final appearance in the series came in "Day 5: 7:00am-8:00am", where Tony can be seen holding it at home while watching the news and talking with Michelle, minutes before her death in the car bomb explosion. It does not appear in any scene involving Tony in Season 7.

When Bernard reprised the role in 24: Legacy, he brought his own Cubs mug to place in the background of his scenes at his D.C. base of operations. [1] It can be seen on a table while Tony speaks to Rebecca Ingram on the phone in "Day 10: 6:00pm-7:00pm".

Background information and notes

Curiously, according to the novel Operation Hell Gate, Tony is from the South side of Chicago, where the White Sox play. However, geographical location does not always determine fan loyalty in the city's two baseball teams.
At 27 appearances, Cubby has appeared in more episodes than several actors in the main cast.
