Denise and Steve were friends of Jack and Teri Bauer. They had a daughter named Nicki who was having problems. They took Nicki to a therapist, which seemed to help her. During Day 1, Teri suggested that she and Jack do the same for their daughter, Kim Bauer.
While Day 1 was airing, the official website for 24 had a feature 'Kim's Desktop', which allowed users to read Kim's email. One of the emails revealed that Nicki is Kim's cousin. For this to be possible, either Jack or (more likely) Teri Bauer had to have Denise for a sister or Steve for a brother.
