This article's subject relates to Season 1 of 24.

Douglas Newman was the Sergeant at the Van Nuys Precinct, Los Angeles during Day 1.

Greg Penticoff, who was being pursued by CTU Agent Jack Bauer and LAPD Officer Jessie Hampton, was taken into custody at Sgt. Newman's precinct. Bauer wished to question Penticoff, and tried to persuade Sgt. Newman at 4:15am to let him speak to the suspect, who killed Hampton. Newman at first disagreed, saying that the lieutenant (who was off duty) would make the same call, but he eventually relented, and had Penticoff moved into a room for Jack. Before Jack could question the suspect, Jack's superior George Mason interrupted and took him from Sgt. Newman.

At about 4:30am, Mason apologized and told Newman that Jack's behavior did not represent CTU agents' typical behavior. Sgt. Newman told Jack to control himself when he got into a fight with Hampton's partner, Officer Phillips. Later, at 4:43, Phillips asked Sgt. Newman if he could process Penticoff, because he wanted to remain until the criminal was behind bars without bail. But Newman was surprised to see Phillips, because he thought the officer had checked out earlier. Newman and Phillips then realized that Penticoff escaped, with help from Bauer.

Newman, Phillips, and other officers were present when Mason coordinated with Davis in tracking down Bauer and Penticoff via satellite. Penticoff was returned to the precinct soon after. ("4:00am-5:00am")
