The F-18 Hornet was a type of military aircraft flown by the United States Marine Corps, the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. It had both air-to-air and air-to-surface attack capabilities.

Day 3

During Day 3, two Marine F-18's (Call sign 'Guardian Angel') were mobilized by CTU to shoot down the helicopter that was attempting to rescue Stephen Saunders after the trade for his daughter went sour. Chase Edmunds communicated with the pilots, requesting air support.

Guardian Angel fires a single Air-to-Ground Missile which subsequently destroys the chopper.

Day 4

During Day 4, CTU located the co-ordinates of the airborne nuclear cruise missile and saw that it was heading towards Los Angeles. Two F-18's, Delta 1 and Delta 2, one flown by Capt. Clarke, were assigned to seek and destroy the cruise missile. The mission was a success, with the missile being located and destroyed the before it could be detonated over the city.

Day 5

During Day 5, a Navy F-18 from NAS Point Mugu was sent, under the orders of President Charles Logan, to shoot down diplomatic Flight 520. President Logan was informed that Jack Bauer commandeered the flight to retrieve evidence which incriminated him, so he attempted to have it shot down. Jack forced Scott Evans, the co-pilot, to land the plane on the freeway. Later, the military scrambled fighters to destroy the Natalia, a Russian submarine which had been commandeered by Dawn Brigade terrorists. The fighters were called off after Jack and Christopher Henderson had neutralized the threat within the sub.

Day 6

Two Navy F-18's (Call Sign 'Echo-64') were sent by Vice President Noah Daniels to level an oil platform owned by BXJ Technologies. The American government needed to destroy the an extremely sensitive piece of Russian technology known as an FB subcircuit board, stolen by federal fugitive Phillip Bauer, which was on the platform and about to be illegally given to the Chinese military. The fighters fired upon the platform with air-to-surface missiles, destroying it, and the nearby Chinese submarine turned back for home.

Echo-64 fires 12 Air-to-Ground Missiles between them, which subsequently obliterates the BXJ oil platform.

Day 7

An F-18 was assigned to target the Starkwood base, with the objective of incinerating the Prion variant pathogen which was under its control. The strike was called off by President Taylor who was forced into the decision by Jonas Hodges who threatened to launch the missiles if she did not comply.

Background information and notes

  • The F/A-18 Hornet is an all-weather fighter aircraft designed and built in America by McDonnell Douglas. In reality it is flown by the Marines and the Navy, however not by the Air Force.
