The navigation templates look cool, but as has been said elsewhere completely ruin the whatlinkshere tool on any page they're employed on, just listing every other page in the same category. After enquiring on community central, it seems that mediawiki can't distinguish at all between links that are contained within transcluded templates and normal ones on the page. So, I'm proposing the only solution I can see - set up redirects on all pages that are linked in the templates, eg. [[Jack Bauer templatelink]] and, within the templates only, use these redirects. This would separate out the non-links in the template from actual links. I am prepared to do this work if no-one has objections, and as it would only be used on those templates wouldn't affect general editing practices to maintain it.--Acer4666 (talk) 22:23, June 10, 2013 (UTC)

That is perfect, you are a genius. That problem has always bugged me, and I know I complained about it before, but was never clever enough to imagine a solution like that. Well, using redirects would partly defeat the purpose, because the current page is bolded within the template when you're viewing it on that page. I.e., on the page for David Palmer you would scroll down to the template and see his name bolded on the template, showing where he fit in the chronology. It's annoying, but there doesn't seem to be an official workaround yet (from [1]). There is the "Hide transclusions" filter on What Links Here, but it appears to do absolutely nothing. I feel like it's not enough of a problem to be worth the effort your solution would involve, and in any case it's possible MediaWiki might end up fixing it. --Pyramidhead (talk) 05:00, June 12, 2013 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that the purpose of navigation templates is to show the current page as bolded, it's just to stop pages linking to themselves which could be slightly confusing, but I think that is a small compromise to give in to as, currently, these templates defeat the entire purpose of whatlinkshere--Acer4666 (talk) 14:37, June 12, 2013 (UTC)
