John David "J.D." Cullum was born in New York City. His father is Tony Award-winning actor John Cullum and modern dancer/choreographer, playwright, and novelist Emily Frankel. Cullum is a long-standing member of the Antaeus Theater Company, in Los Angeles.

Although Cullum has focused mostly on his theater career, he has appeared in numerous TV shows.
