James "Jim" Prescott was Vice President of the United States of America under President David Palmer.

Before Day 2

Prescott was chosen by Senator David Palmer, a candidate for president, to be his running mate and he became Vice President when Palmer was elected president.

Prior to being tapped as Vice President, Prescott served in the United States Senate for three terms representing his home state of Colorado and two terms as Colorado State Treasurer before that.

Day 2

Following a failed nuclear attack on the United States, retaliatory strikes were planned against three middle eastern countries believed to be supporting the terrorists responsible. President David Palmer was hesitant to launch the strikes following word from CTU agent Jack Bauer that the information implicating the three countries may have been fabricated.

Prescott, believing the evidence to be legitimate, and the window for a successful strike limited, collaborated with Palmer's Chief of Staff, Mike Novick, and several members of his Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to declare Palmer unfit to lead, remove him from office, and install Prescott as Acting President. This caused tension between him and Palmer, and, before the vote occurred, Palmer said that if he won he wanted Prescott's resignation.

After learning that the entire situation was orchestrated by a businessman named Peter Kingsley (after Kingsley implicated himself during a recorded conversation with Palmer's ex-wife Sherry Palmer), Prescott aborted the planned attacks and restored Palmer to power. Shamed by his actions, he and the cabinet members who voted against Palmer offered their resignations. Palmer warned them that they made a grave mistake but did not accept their resignations.

Ironically, Palmer was gravely injured in an assassination attempt only minutes later, forcing Prescott to take office once again.

The Game

Following Mandy's attempted assassination of President Palmer, Vice President Prescott assumed Palmer's duties as President, until he himself became the target of an assassination attempt by Max, the same individual who arranged the attack on Palmer. The attempt was ultimately foiled by CTU agents; however, he was injured in the blast by an exploding vehicle. With Prescott in critical condition, Palmer decided to retake office.

Day 3

During the events of Day 3, Vice President Prescott participated via teleconference in a cabinet briefing regarding the threat of the Cordilla Virus and the demands of Stephen Saunders after the execution of Ryan Chappelle.

In the aftermath of the day's events, Palmer chose not to seek reelection in the 2004 elections, so the Democratic Party chose Prescott to run as the standard bearer against Keeler, who defeated Prescott by double-digit margin afterwards.

Background information and notes

  • Prescott is the only vice president on 24 who appeared in that role in more than one season.
  • In 24:The Official CTU Operations Manual, it shows Prescott's picture but mistakes him for John Keeler.
