James Sofer was an agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Sofer served as superintendent of the DEA's Miami-Dade County, Florida division from 1993 to 1995, and was Kevin Carroll's superior during that time. Speaking to investigative journalist Marc Cerasini, Sofer later recalled that Carroll was a poor agent from the start, striking him as "one of those guys who watched too many episodes of Miami Vice growing up. He thought narcotics agents all drove Jaguars, wore designer clothes, and took off on undercover assignments to Colombia and Marseilles. A lone cowboy, and a dumb one, too." (Findings at CTU)
