John Smith was raised in England. He studied at Sir Walter St John's, graduating in 1976. Smith started his career as an editor in 1987. In 1990, he was one of the founding partners of Whitehouse Post Productions in London. The company also opened offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York in 2001. Smith has worked as a commercials editor in numerous publicity campaigns for brands like Pepsi, Coors, Sky, and others.

Through his career as an editor, Smith has worked in high profile films like Leaving Las Vegas and Proof of Life, as well as independent films like Sliding Doors and One Night Stand. He has also worked on TV shows like House of Lies and The Unusuals. Smith was also an editor on the film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, directed by Stephen Hopkins.
