Kirk Acevedo (born November 27, 1974; age 49) played U.S. Marshal George Avila during Season 5 of 24.

Biography[]

Kirk Acevedo, originally from Brooklyn, New York, is an American actor of Puerto Rican and Chinese descent. He is best known for his performances as Miguel Alvarez in Oz and, coincidentally, District Attorney Investigator Hector Salazar in Law & Order: Trial by Jury (sharing the same name as a character in 24).

Kirk's parents immigrated from Puerto Rico and settled in Brooklyn, where Acevedo was born. Later they moved to the Bronx where Kirk was raised and went to school. Since childhood he had shown an interest in acting; he would perform before his family in improvised shows. Acevedo also participated in his high school's drama club.

After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the SUNY Purchase School of Acting (Purchase College). In the 1990s Acevedo earned his BFA (Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts) and soon auditioned for Oz. Some of his classmates landed parts in the series and this motivated him to try out for a part. He landed the role of the half-crazed gang leader prisoner "Miguel Alvarez". This won him the Alma Award four different times.

Among the other series that Acevedo has participated in are Band of Brothers (with Michael Cudlitz, Frank John Hughes, Ross McCall), NYPD Blue (with Esai Morales and Lana Parrilla) and Fringe (with John Noble). He has also starred in films like Bait (with Doug Hutchison and Nestor Serrano), Boiler Room, Dinner Rush (with Edoardo Ballerini), Arresting Gena (with Vincent Laresca) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (with Lombardo Boyar).

In 1999, Kirk won another ALMA Award for his role in the film The Thin Red Line. He was nominated in the "Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play" category 1997 for the Drama Desk Award for Tooth of Crime.

He co-founded the theater company, The Rowschach Group, with Shea Wigham.
