The Mediterranean Sea was a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean, and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Europe, on the east by the Middle East, and on the south by North Africa.
Islands in the Mediterranean included the nations of Cyprus and Malta, the Italian territories of Sicily and Sardinia, and the French territory of Corsica. ("Day 9: 2:00pm-3:00pm")
At the time of Day 9, the People's Republic of China had dispatched a carrier wing to the Mediterranean for the first time in history, as part of their "Friendship Tour." This was believed to be an attempt to intimidate the British into abandoning their military base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, which China regarded as lying in its own sphere of influence. ("Day 9: 11:00am-12:00pm") The Shenyang, one of the Chinese carriers in question, was south of Gibraltar when it was sunk by the USS Massachusetts in an unprovoked surprise attack. The fire order was forged by Cheng Zhi in order to incite a war between China and the United States. ("Day 9: 9:00pm-10:00pm")
