For the character, see Michael Loceff (character).

Michael Loceff (born 1952) was a writer and producer on 24's first seven seasons. He is the cousin of 24 co-creator Joel Surnow, with whom he wrote all but two of his credited episodes.

Biography and career[]

Trained as a mathematician and computer scientist, Loceff first started writing on La Femme Nikita, created by Surnow and Robert Cochran, primarily consulting on technical questions before becoming a writer and producer. After joining 24 as a writer and co-producer for its first season, he divided his time between his Seattle residence and Los Angeles, where he kept an apartment near the set. In addition to writing four to six episodes a season, Loceff polished scenes in other episodes with a focus on the relationships between characters at CTU, claiming that Chloe O'Brian was his favorite character to write for.[1] Loceff left the show along with Surnow following the 2007 WGA strike, with "Day 7: 2:00pm-3:00pm" being the last episode he helped write.

Aside from his television work, Loceff has been a professor of computer science at Foothill College in Los Altos, California for over thirty years. During his tenure on 24, he continued to teach class online part-time, scaling back his duties to devote attention to the writing process. In an interview, Loceff admitted to sneaking in references to his other career in a few episodes; in "Day 1: 2:00pm-3:00pm," Milo Pressman's network password is "foothill94022," in reference to the school and its zip code. Also, in "Day 2: 12:00pm-1:00pm," the volume Paula Schaeffer gives for the encryption key is "Etudes," a reference to the ETUDES open-source learning management system that Loceff wrote in 1994 and continues to be used by Foothill faculty.[2]
