He is the youngest of five children of Barbara Jean (née Gottlich), a homemaker, and John Wilbur Johnson, a corporate executive who became an Episcopal priest later in life. MacNicol studied at the University of Dallas and then, the University of Minnesota. While in Minnesota, he started acting in theater, and a New York talent agent recommended him to move to New York.

Biography and career

Peter MacNicol was born and raised in Dallas, Texas.
