Ricardo Antonio Chavira was born in Austin and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He is descended from a family of migrant workers who stressed the importance of a good education. His father is a judge in Texas, and his mother earned three masters degrees, in Public Health, Anthropology, and Theology. Chavira has an undergraduate degree from the University of the Incarnate Word and received an MFA from the University of California-San Diego. Chavira has a son, Tomas Antonio Chavira, born in January 2003.
