The Shenyang was a Chinese aircraft carrier. As part of the PRC's "Friendship Tour", the Shenyang was dispatched to sail the Mediterranean Sea, the first Chinese vessel in history to do so. ("Day 9: 11:00am-12:00pm")

During Day 9, the Shenyang was en route to the Mediterranean south of Gibraltar. Cheng Zhi used the defense override module designed by Adrian Cross to transmit an order authorizing the USS Massachusetts, a nearby U.S. Navy nuclear submarine, to fire on the Shenyang. The attack was carried out with two Mark 48 ADCAP torpedo strikes at 8:59pm GMT. ("Day 9: 8:00pm-9:00pm")

Over a thousand of Shenyang's personnel were killed in the strike, and more followed as the ship began to sink. President James Heller directed the USS Massachusetts to commence salvage and rescue operations immediately. Despite Heller's insistence that the attack was not ordered by the U.S. military command, President Wei regarded the ship's sinking as an act of war, and mobilized his naval fleet to attack the U.S. naval base at Okinawa, Japan. The two countries came close to war, but Jack Bauer was able to prove Cheng's survival to the Chinese and they backed off in exchange for reparations for the loss of the ship and crew. ("Day 9: 9:00pm-10:00pm")

Background information and notes Edit

Additionally, Shenyang Corporation is the manufacturer of the primary aircraft used aboard Liaoning, known as the Shenyang J-15.
