William McKinley was President of the United States at the turn of the twentieth century.
McKinley was assassinated in 1901, one of the few Presidents to be killed during his term of office, along with Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, and John F. Kennedy. McKinley's assassination led to the expansion of the United States Secret Service's duties to include personal protection of government officials and their families, a function they continued to fulfill for many decades.
